Here was our wee boat on a calm morning in Westcott Bay on San
Juan Islands. This year's vacation was a dream for David. A week
cruising on a sailboat with the whole family. An attempt when Camille was
very young went poorly. I am pleased to report this trip
went very well.
We chartered this very old-fashioned style vessel out of
Anacortes, WA. Note the long bowsprit (the piece of wood sticking out
of the bow), stern-hung rudder, high bulwarks, small portholes, etc. It's
known as a British
Channel Cutter. It was made famous
by Lynn and Larry Pardey,
who sailed a similar design around the world a few times. It sailed better
than I thought it would.
From Daniel, "We are sailing on our boat trip. That's our boat."
Dan says, "That's my dad sailing the boat."
"That's me climbing on the boom. That's my sister helping me up."
"I'm on a hike, and that's a big, giant rock that I'm on. That's just one part of the rock that I'm on. It's a lot bigger."
"That's us on the boom. That's us waiting for Daddy
to clear customs." Only the captain of the vessel is allowed off
until customs
is cleared. We went to Canada for three nights. Going into Canada
at was easy. Getting back into the US (at Roche
Harbor) meant
waiting in a 'boat queue' off the customs dock (with some rather grumpy boaters
despite the very pleasant weather) for 45 minutes,
then waiting in the immigration office for some more time. Afterwards, the
customs folks shooed us off the dock quickly.
Molly studies the chart.
Here Camille reads 'Captain
Underpants' to Daniel in the pilot berth. There was quite a bit of
fort making, game playing, and reading
in Dan's berth (it was the coziest).
Dan took this picture of a great blue heron. Notice the finger in the margin.
Some of the thousands of San Juan Islands.
Camille hanging on the stern.
Cutey!
Smiley!
Camille's attempt at a photo of us at the newer studentless school on Stuart Island. The angle is less than flattering (for me).
Here's the older one room school house.
A swing we found on the road to the school on Stuart Island.
Daniel mans the helm under the supervision of Dad. He
was promoted from stow-a-way to scallywag on the trip. He had to pass
a
series of rigorous tests by the skipper.
Camille takes a turn at the helm.
Dan is pleased with getting on Mom and Dad's bunk.
Camille rose in the ranks from scallywag to 'dinghy captain'. Here she trails behind us in calm conditions as we sail along.
Here's our inch-over-the-limits Dungeness crab we caught on
our first night. We caught two keepers on the first night and no more
keepers after that. It turns out that chicken works well as bait. We
also got a tip that a cat food can with a few holes also works.
Out for a row.
Prior to the trip, Dan draws at home with incredible intensity..
