Getting ready for a picnic in our favorite spot in Discovery Park.
We often go back to Discovery Park year after year since it has
picnic tables, an unbeatable view and things for the kids to explore.

Camille reminds me of Julie Andrews in the opening sequence
of the Sound of Music as she runs through the wildflowers.

A smiley Daniel shows off his picks.

In the background is Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

After the picnic, we headed to Lake Union for the Sunday ice cream cruise.
We also spent time watching the float planes land and take off.

In July, we went with some friends to Sequim Bay State Park.
Daniel and Dad hang out on the floating dock.

Daniel plays in the surf at Dungeness Spit.

Playing in a tent.

Listening to a book on tape in the back of the mini-van.

A group of mini-hikers.

In early August, we went to Northern Idaho and stayed a week
at the Red Fir Resort on Lake Pend O'reille (pronounce 'pond-o-ray')
near Sandpoint. Here Daniel fishes off the dock in the evening with
other kids.

Here's his very first fish. It was a tasty rainbow trout.

Here's Camille's fourth fish of the trip. It was a small mouth bass,
just large enough (12 inches) to keep.

This proved to be our most successful fishing technique.
Dad rows while the kids troll. When the fish strikes, the child
gets very excited and scared and quickly hands the rod to dad.

It was insanely hot - in the mid-90s every day without a
cloud in the sky (except one day). Swimming to cool off
was de rigueur.

Daniel floats on a borrowed turtle powered by mom.

The resort was in a deer preserve (i.e. no hunting). This has
resulted in a dramatic overpopulation of skinny, sickly looking
deer looking for handouts. Despite many written warnings,
other families at the resort couldn't resist feeding them Cheetos
or whatever snack was nearby.

Camille spent the entire trip trying hard to socialize with other
kids, as is her M.O. Toward the end of the trip, she finally got
other kids to play with her. Here they all enjoy "Otter Pops".

We brought along Keith's Laser sailboat. Here I attempt to
coax a little boat speed out of very little wind. Other than one
day when a front blew through, the winds were strictly light and
variable. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy getting out on
the sailboat anyway.
On the last day, I slipped out early to participate in my first
open water swim in ages. I swam, along with 422 other bodies,
in the Long Bridge Swim in Sandpoint. I did better than I had
hoped, getting 26th overall. Sorry, no pictures here; the rest
of the family slept in, then packed for the long drive home.
